Weekend Gridlock, Parking Problems Likely In Pittsburgh
Three major events will create significant challenges for motorists in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Three major events in the city on Sunday will result in numerous street closures for hours and likely will trigger significant traffic and parking issues.
The Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, with more than 46,000 participants, will result in multiple street closures throughout the 24-mile course from 1:30 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. The closures will make entering and exiting the city extremely difficult.
The Pirates play the San Diego Padres at 1:35 p.m. and two promotions are expected to bolster attendance. It's Youth Baseball and Softball Day in which 1,000 young baseball and softball players will participate in a pregame warning track parade; it's also Star Wars Day, in which fans who purchase a special ticket package receive a collectible PNC Park-Millenium Falcon figuring.

The University of Pittsburgh will hold its 2025 Spring Commencement at PPG Paints Arena at 2:30 p.m. The commencement ceremony usually is held at the Petersen Events Center in Oakland, but Pitt announced in February it was moving the event to the arena to accommodate the largest graduating class in the university's history.
Initial marathon Downtown street closures actually will begin Friday at noon on the Boulevard of the Allies between Wood Street and Stanwix Street. That closure will be in effect through the conclusion on race weekend.

On Saturday, road closures for the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine 5K, U.S. Steel Pittsburgh Champions Mile, and Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon will begin at 6:45 a.m. in the North Side and Downtown areas. Streets are expected to reopen by 12 p.m.
