Intense But Short Storms Swamp Streets

"Pop-Up" thunderstorms give credence to flash flood advisories along Upper Main Line.

Fast-moving and intense thunderstorms moved along the Main Line Monday, swamping some streets in Tredyffrin and Easttown and causing trees to come down further east in Lower Merion and parts of southern New Jersey.

Driving along Lancaster Avenue as the skies opened up showed exactly how fast intense summer storms can overwhelm drains. The rain started moving into the Devon area shortly before 5 p.m. and skies were clearing by 6:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory Monday warning about the possibility of flash flooding. Drivers in the right lanes of Lancaster Avenue in parts of Wayne and Devon were left to navigate swamped roads as waters gushed into any low lying shoulders.
