Police Warn of Phone Scams

Have you ever gotten a call that just seems too outrageous to be true? Frequently, it is.

Police in Tredyffrin Township are warning residents, especially older adults, to beware of phone calls from people they don’t know telling them that they’ve won money or a new car. In most cases, the victim is required to send money to claim their fictitious prize.

An 84-year-old Tredyffrin resident got a call last Tuesday from someone asking for $35,000 to claim a prize, according to police. When the would-be victim denied having that kind of money, the caller apparently reduced the ask to $3,000 and the would-be victim recognized the scam and hung up.

Scams Don’t Always Claim Good News

Almost a week before that, on July 24, an 86-year-old Wayne resident was scammed, according to police.

A caller told the woman that he was her grandson and needed $1,500 in bail money, according to police, which she sent via MoneyGram.
