Truck Accident Shuts Down Old Eagle School Road At Rush Hour

Road was expected to remain closed as late as midnight.

A Fed Ex tractor-trailer truck making a right turn into a parking lot on Old Eagle School Road snagged a telephone pole support wire, causing the pole to crack and snap in half and bringing down wires.

No one was injured in the accident which shut down Old Eagle School Road in Devon between Route 30/Lancaster Ave. and the Strafford SEPTA station.  The road was expected to remain closed until at least 10 p.m. Monday so that a new pole could be installed and power restored to homes in the immediate area.

The truck driver told Patch he was not injured. Power wires came down on top of the 28 foot Fed Ex trailer. Police cordoned off Old Eagle School Road from Lancaster Ave. to just south of the SEPTA station. The driver said the trailer clipped the support wire as he turned just a little tighter than usual to avoid a car that was coming out of the parking lot. The driver said police told him no charges would be filed.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. at the height of rush hour and just before heavy "pop up" thunderstorms soaked the area. The driver, who asked not to be identified, said weather was not a factor in the accident. PECO crews arrived on the scene just as the thunderstorms were soaking the area.

Several neighbors told Patch that PECO told them to expect power to be restored in the neighborhood at about 10 p.m. Monday night.
