Motorists Were Stranded For Hours Wednesday Evening On The Pennsylvania Turnpike
A fuel tanker truck had overturned just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, causing a major traffic disruption to both eastbound and westbound lanes.
FORT WASHINGTON, PA — Drivers found themselves stranded for hours Wednesday evening after a tanker truck flipped over on the eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Fort Washington interchange, an accident that caused a fuel spill on the roadway and required cleanup by hazmat crews.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike put out an emergency alert Wednesday evening warning motorists of the accident and warning folks to stay away from that area of the highway.
Local media reported that drivers were instructed to dial *11 on their cellphones if they were running out of gas or if they required other immediate attention.

Channel 6 Action News showed aerial footage of the tanker truck as it was laying on its side.
Emergency responders were seen dousing the truck with foam so as to try and contain the spilled fuel.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of the roadway were affected by the accident.
There is still no word on what exactly caused the tanker truck to overturn.
The accident occurred near mile-marker 337 in Fort Washington.
