Runner Reflections at the Jenkintown 5K Sunset Run

As a Sports Marketing major and intern, I set out to get the scoop on who exactly takes part in these runs.

Runner Reflections at the Jenkintown 5K Sunset Run

By Jared Lamberg

The lead-up to the Jenkintown Sunset 5K run/walk was a little bit cloudy, but that did not scare away athletes of all ages from coming out and taking part in this event to benefit the community. As a Sports Marketing major, and intern assigned with getting the scoop on who exactly takes part in these runs, I wanted to find out what kind of preparation is necessary to be able to handle long distance running. Everyone who I got a chance to speak to at the run was serious about running, but was able to let loose and answer a few questions before competing in the race. The passion from all of the runners and surrounding the race was easy to see; these people love their sport. If you are interested in learning more about 5K events or long distance races, it is definitely worth checking one out near you soon!

Meet friends Tony and Marco!

Tony is from Newtown, PA and trains every day, both upper and lower body exercises, and has been running seriously for 7 years. (left) Coming all the way from Trenton, Marco has lots of running experience, including marathons, and “Ultras” (anything longer than a marathon). He has even ran a 35 miler! Has ran races in London, Madrid, and Berlin. Heard about the race through word of mouth. “Running is on a spectrum, some casual runners, some who run once a week.” (right)

Meet Tom Avril!

Tom runs 4 times a week. He does not change his diet leading up to a race. Tom has been running regularly since high school. Has ran half marathons, and the Broad Street Run. Lives in Jenkintown. Says it is fun to see neighbors participating in the run and just out supporting. Does not enjoy the hills on the course of the run.

Meet Adenauer Lima!

Adenauer has ran for 6 years. He tries to eat healthy leading up to a race. Goes to the gym 2 times a week. Has ran one half marathon previously. He is from Wyncote, and saw signs/banners advertising the race, which made him want to come out and take part.

Meet Dan and Dawn Reitz

Dan trains for a race the same as he normally would train: he work out 4-5 times a week. Generally does half marathons and full marathons. Has ran 3 half marathons already this year! Resides in Glenside. Dawn, Dan’s wife, mostly does full marathons, half marathons, and 10 milers. Doing less 5Ks usually and more long distance. Enjoys the run is being midweek. “Who doesn’t like a good weekday run?” She appreciates not having to wake up early for the race.

Talking with and getting to know the runners was a really unique experience, and I had no idea how many serious runners show up to these sort of races. It is worth noting that it was not only serious runners, but many casual athletes and members of the community who just came out to walk and support. The event was very well organized with lots of security and tents with food/giveaways. If this family-friendly event sounds appealing to you, keep an eye out for a run near you in the future!
