Pennsbury Superintendent Gretzula Announces Retirement

The district's superintendent for the past four years, Gretzula announced plans to retire at the end of this school year.

FALLSINGTON, PA — William Gretzula, the superintendent of the Pennsbury School District, plans to retire at the end of this school year.

Gretzula, who has been Pennsbury's superintendent for the past four years, announced his plans publicly on Thursday, at the Pennsbury school board's digital meeting. During the meeting, he said health concerns he's had since December helped him make the decision to retire.

"They won't be life-threatening, but they certainly require some life changes," Gretzula said. "That's given me some time to reflect on the past but, more importantly, forced me to consider the future."

During the meeting, Gretzula thanked Pennsbury teachers and staff, as well as school board members.

"You don't get to decide how you will be remembered, but trust me when I say I will look back on my time in Pennsbury as some of my favorite years in education," he said.

He particularly thanked the Pennsbury community for its work and support during the coronavirus outbreak.

"We recognize these decisions may not have been popular for all, but I appreciate our team's steadfast commitment to doing what they believe is right," Gretzula said. "I also appreciate the time, energy and deep reflection the school board has provided over the past six months ... . It has been hard, but we have been in it together."

Pennsbury school board President TR Kannan said he received a resignation letter from Gretzula on Thursday.

"While there will be much time between now and June 30 to say goodbye to Dr. Gretzula, tonight I would like to just say thank you," Kannan said at Thursday night's meeting. "Thank you, Dr. Gretzula, for your leadership of our district these last four years and, especially, thank you for your leadership during this pandemic."
