The total was from 38 departments and the state police, the police chiefs association said.

Police across Rhode Island made 57 driving under the influence arrests during the Fourth of July weekend, according to the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association.

Police chiefs association President Thomas Oates called the nearly four dozen arrests a "clear reminder that too many people are still making dangerous choices behind the wheel."

"Every one of those arrests represents a potential tragedy that was prevented and I am so proud of the collaborative law enforcement community that helps to facilitate our coordinated efforts," said Oates, who is also the Woonsocket police chief.
