Rhode Island Man Had 1,000+ Child Porn Images: Feds
Authorities said Jose Cortes, of Central Falls, took explicit photos of a toddler.
CENTRAL FALLS, RI — A Rhode Island man on Thursday was charged with possessing more than 1,000 pieces of child pornography, authorities said. Jose Cortes, 38, was charged with production and possession of child porn, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen Dambruch. Some of the images involved him taking explicit photos of a toddler, according to Dambruch.
Police launched an investigation in November 2017 after the toddler's mother became aware of the photos from one of Cortes' friends, Dambruch said. Police seized several devices belonging to Cortes and detectives found more than 1,000 images and videos of child porn.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the federal "Project Safe Childhood" initiative.

Cortes was held in custody after he appeared in federal court in Providence Thursday to face the charges.
