Speakman Cited as 'Housing Hero'

The president of the Barrington Town Council receives an award from RI Housing at a State House ceremony.

Barrington’s Town Council president is a ā€œhousing hero.ā€

June Sager Speakman was honored recently with a 2013 Partners in Housing Award from Rhode Island Housing. It was presented during an awards ceremony with Gov. Lincoln Chafee at the State House on May 9.

The awards recognize members of the housing community who exemplify dedication and commitment to creating affordable, safe and healthy homes for Rhode Islanders, according to Richard Godfrey of Barrington, executive director of RI Housing.

Ā ā€œI am proud to join Rhode Island Housing in recognizing these outstanding individuals and groups for their role in providing housing opportunities for Rhode Islanders,ā€ said Gov. Chafee. ā€œToday’s recipients are very deserving of these awards, and I applaud their consistent hard work, especially in these difficult economic times, to provide our state’s residents with a safe place to call home.ā€

Besides serving as Town Council president, Speakman is the liaison to the Barrington Housing Board of Trustees – the board dedicated to creating affordable housing in town.Ā

RI Housing said in a press release that the awards ā€œidentify, recognize, celebrate and showcase the innovative work and many success stories associated with the creation of affordable homes in our state. This year’s award winners reflect the diverse range of individuals, organizations and initiatives that are ongoing throughout Rhode Island.ā€
