View Teacher Movie -- 'Freedom Writers'

The teacher-themed movie and lecture series concludes tonight at 7 in the Barrington library auditorium with the Hilary Swank film.

The Barrington library concludes its series of Teacher Movies Through the Years today with "Freedom Writers," starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank.

The series has been screening one teacher-themed movie a month. The show starts at 7 pm with a follow-up discussion led by Gino Sangiuliano of the RI Department of Education.

Sangiuliano has 20 years of experience as an educator and brings his knowledge and passion of teaching and his love of films to the library.

Today's movie features Swank, a young teacher who inspires her class of at-risk students how to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school. The 2007 drama also features Scott Glenn, Imelda Staunton and Patrick Dempsey.

The movie is based on the book, The Freedom Writers Diary, by teacher Erin Gruwell, who wrote the story based on Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach, California.

"Freedom Writer"s runs for 123 minutes; it has a PG rating.
