80-Year-Old Coventry Woman Kidnapped, Man Arrested: Police

Coventry police say Steven Henning, 54, kidnapped an 80-year-old woman and brought her to Smithfield. The victim is in the hospital.

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry police arrested a man Sunday they said kidnapped an 80-year-old Coventry woman and led officers on a high-speed chase.

Steven Henning, 54, was charged with kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon in a dwelling, first-degree robbery, assault on a person over 60-serious bodily injury, and burglary and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Around 8:19 a.m., local officers received a call from the Smithfield Police Department about a potential abduction that happened in Coventry. Coventry police said they responded to a home in town to investigate and learned the victim was taken from her home and was brought to Smithfield.

Police said they later identified Henning as a suspect. According to police, Henning led officers on a high-speed chase before eventually being caught by Providence police.

Coventry police said the victim is being treated at a local hospital.

Police did not release any further information about the kidnapping, saying it is still under investigation.

Henning was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Coventry at the Kent County courthouse. Police said he is also facing charges out of Burrillville and Smithfield.
