Boy, 13, Stole Car in Coventry, Crashed in Cranston: Police

A boy who allegedly stole a car from a CVS in Coventry was not hurt after rolling the vehicle in Cranston Sunday night.

COVENTRY, RI—A 13-year-old boy is facing charges of larceny, reckless driving and driving without a license after leading police on a chase in a stolen Kia before he crashed in Cranston Sunday night.

Police said the boy stole a car from the CVS at 733 Tiogue Ave. in Coventry at around 10:45 p.m. and was spotted by area police a short time later in West Warwick.

The boy did not stop as police pursued and officers eventually stopped the chase after he left Coventry and drove into Cranston.

Police continued to scan the area for the car and eventually came upon a single-car crash in Cranston near St. Mary's Church.

The boy, police said, lost control after he nearly struck a telephone pole, over-corrected and struck a curb.

The boy was not seriously hurt but was transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital as a precaution, police said.

Coventry Police Chief Col. John S. MacDonald said in an e-mail that the boy lives in a group home and is not a Coventry native.

The matter will be adjudicated in Family Court.
