Coventry Hiker Rescued Sunday On Mount Washington

New Hampshire Fish and Game officers helped two Rhode Island men off a ravine Sunday night.

COVENTRY, RI — New Hampshire Fish and Game and volunteers went to the Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington on Sunday night to find two Rhode Island hikers who had lost their way. According to the agency's Facebook post, Daniel Rueda, 27, of Warwick, Rhode Island and Christopher Petteruto, 21, of Coventry, were stranded "in treacherous terrain" on the ravine. They called 911 for help around 1 p.m., but volunteers from the Applachian Mountain Club could not find them. Fish and Game organized additional search and rescue teams, as temperatures began to plummet on the mountain. The hikers and the rescue teams were in contact over cell phone, but it took until almost 7:30 p.m. to locate them.

"At 7:27 PM, rescue crews successfully reached the hikers at a location approximately 1000 feet off of the Huntington Ravine Trail," Fish and Game said. "The hikers were located in an area of ledge, making it difficult to move either up or down. The hikers were subsequently assessed and provided with warm clothing, water and food." Ultimately, the two Rhode Island men hiked back to their car with the rescue crews.
