Hopkins Hollow Road Bridge to Close for Three Weeks

Coventry motorists who travel on the road will encounter a detour for three weeks beginning Monday.

COVENTRY, RI—Drivers in Coventry who travel on Hopkins Hollow Road near Roaring Brook will be dealing with detours for three weeks beginning Monday, April 18.

The state Department of Transportation is closing Hopkins Hollow Bridge to make repairs to the concrete and stone arch of the 92-year-old structure which is deemed structurally deficient.

The DOT said in a news release that a recent inspection showed "significant deterioration to the arch bridge that if left alone, could eventually lead to a more costly rehabilitation."

The work will cost $400,000, the DOT said, and is part of a larger $6.5 million bridge repair project involving nine bridges across the state.

According to the DOT, the work involves filling voids and cracks between the bridge's concrete arch and its outer structural components. The bridge needs to be closed to allow sufficient curing time for a two-inch layer of grout being used for the repair while protecting the arch's structural integrity during construction.

During the bridge's closure, motorists on Route 102 North will be directed to follow a signed detour using Route 117, and those on Route 102 South to follow a signed detour using Plain Meeting House Road.

A detour map with turn-by-turn directions (also posted here) is available on RIDOT's website at www.dot.ri.gov/detourmaps.
