Shortly before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Coventry (Anthony) Fire District crews, assisted by Central Coventry and Hopkins Hill fire departments, responded to a fire alarm activation at Nino's on Lake Tiogue.Â
According to Coventry Fire Chief Paul Labbadia, upon arrival, firefighters noted significant smoke coming from the kitchen and quickly realized by the odor that it was originating from the restaurant's ovens. After a brief investigation, it was discovered that several batches of meatballs were accidentally left baking when employees left the building for the night.
Chief Labbadia explained that very minor smoke damage was noted after firefighters vented smoke from the establishment, and by approximately 8:10 p.m., crews had secured the scene and were waiting for further order from the Department of Health.

"We're just waiting to hear back from the health department about what they recommended to do next," he said. "In these types of situations, they'll usually suggest that any surfaces exposed to smoke be washed down and contaminated food be disposed of."
The restaurant was empty of employees at the time of the call and no injuries were reported.
