Nardolillo Buoyed By News Chafee Might Run For US Senate

Lincoln Chafee has not yet announced he's running for Sheldon Whitehouse's seat but told WPRO Radio he is probably going to run.

COVENTRY, RI—Lincoln Chafee, former Rhode Island governor and U.S. Senator, told WPRO radio on Wednesday he is considering a run against incumbent Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse. Whitehouse is running for a third term. If Chafee follows through, voters will have primaries for both the Democrats and the Republicans. Chafee is a Democrat.

Two Republicans have also announced. They are Robert Flanders, a former Rhode Island Supreme Court associate justice and Coventry's Robert Nardolillo, a state representative.

Nardolillo said he's happy Chafee is talking about a run. He sees the move as a sign the voters want change.

"The recent WPRI Poll showed Mr. Whitehouse underwater in public opinion," Nardolillo said. According to Nardolillo, the poll showed only 46 percent of Rhode Islanders thought Whitehouse was doing a good job in Washington. But 48 percent disapproved.

"The seat is considered so safe by the DNC that there will be no national help, so there shouldn't be too much question about what internal Dem Polls must be showing to get the Party to move like this," he said.

The Chafee news "energized" his campaign, the statement said.
