Phone Scammer Posing As Coventry Officer: Police

Coventry police say the scammer set up a voicemail that may appear legitimate to those who attempt to call the number back.

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry police warned the public about a recent phone scam, where a caller is posing as a local officer.

According to police, the caller has used a spoof number and told potential victims they are a Coventry police officer and "need to speak with you regarding a pressing legal matter." This person also set up a voicemail that may appear legitimate to those who attempt to call the number back, police said.

Coventry police said do not engage with the scammer and hang up immediately. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, notify your bank and call your local police department.
