Another RI Town Courting Costco After Store Withdraws Cranston Plans: Report

Smithfield officials say they would be a good home for Costco because I-95, I-295, and Route 146 connects the town to the whole state.

CRANSTON, RI — Another Rhode Island town is trying to convince Costco to open there after the wholesale chain withdrew its application to build a store in Cranston.

Smithfield Town Councilor John Tassoni has asked Costco’s advisory agency Northwest Atlantic Reality to consider building a store in town along Route 7 and 116, WPRI 12 reported. According to Tassoni, Smithfield may be an attractive home for Costco because it's accessible to all Rhode Islanders via Interstate 95, Interstate 295, and Route 146.

The news of Smithfield's interest in bringing Costco to town comes after Warwick city officials began courting the retailer.

The first Costco Wholesale in the state was expected to open in Cranston at the site of the former state correctional institution's building on Goddard Road. But Costco withdrew its zoning and permit applications.
