Friendly and affectionate, Bella is a red and brindle 1-year-old mixed breed dog. Bella’s former owner relinquished her to the shelter with a dislocated hip that had been left untreated for about 10 days. Once at the shelter, our veterinarian Dr. Ryan Loiselle examined her and put her hip back into place, but it had been dislocated too long and now required surgery. Dr. Loiselle performed a Femural Head Ostectomy (FHO), essentially a limb saving procedure. After her FHO surgery, over time Bella’s body will create a pseudoarthrosis (false joint) to stabilize her hip, reduce pain and restore mobility. Bella’s recovery is going remarkably well. Although Bella will never be a candidate for agility trials or 10-mile hikes, she can enjoy walks, is playful, fun and has a great personality. Bella should be the only dog in the home as she isn’t a fan of other dogs. She likes cats a little “too much”: she wants to play, gets a little too loud and wound up so most cats aren’t reciprocal with their affection. Bella would do best in an adult household or with children over age 12. Bella weighs about 40 pounds, is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. Google Bella’s appearance with Dr. Loiselle on WJAR NBC 10’s “Vet with a Pet” segment with Mario Hilario in early February 2023. Bella is young, good-natured and will make a great companion in the right home.

An important reminder that shelter animals need sufficient time to adapt to a new home, don’t give up on them. If you need advice, please reach out to a certified trainer or behaviorist, your veterinarian or your local shelter/rescue.
