WARWICK, RI — The Boston Celtics honored a Vietnam War veteran from Rhode Island as a "Hero Among Us" for devoting his life to assisting fellow veterans and honoring the legacy of Black soldiers.
Warwick resident Wayne Smith, a U.S. Army veteran and combat medic, received the honor during the Boston Celtics home game against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 9. Overcoming the challenges of wartime trauma, he emerged as a distinguished mental health specialist and advocate for veterans' affairs.
"In his commitment to supporting veterans' everyday needs, Smith spearheaded the initiative to establish the “Patriots of African Descent” Memorial in Washington, D.C.," a Boston Celtics spokesperson said. "His efforts also garnered millions in fundraising for the construction of a similar monument in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. This endeavor aims to preserve the history and experiences of war for future generations, highlighting the contributions and sacrifices of Black military personnel.
