Cranston Officer-involved Shooting Under Investigation

Saturday morning a Cranston officer shot at a man who is now in custody, law enforcement agencies said.

CRANSTON, RI —Local and state police along with the attorney general's office are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Cranston Street near Niantic and Huntington avenues.

Just after 11 a.m., a Cranston police officer fired at someone in a car driving just over the border with Providence, Cranston Police Chief Col. Michael Winquist, said in a statement.

Neither the Cranston officer, who was on-duty, nor the person, described as a "suspect," who the officer shot at was injured, Winquist said. The suspect is in custody, he said, but did not elaborate on what the person was suspected.

Because the officer discharged his weapon, the Cranston and Providence police departments, the attorney general’s office and the Rhode Island State Police are investigating following the attorney general’s protocol regarding the use of deadly force.

The name of those involved were not released. Police said they were not going to release any other information Saturday.
