Cranston's District-Wide All-Day K Registration Begins in January

The school district wants an early start to help get accurate enrollment numbers before the big rollout next year.

CRANSTON, RI—What seemed like a distant dream just a few short years ago—all day kindergarten across the entire district—is set to begin next year.

That means the school department is now in the midst of planning to create new classrooms in the city’s 17 elementary schools, which is no easy task since it’s hard to predict how many students will end up registering before the start of classes in autumn.

So parents are being asked to register eligible children (born before Sept. 1, 2011) a bit earlier than normal this year, beginning in January instead of the usual registration period in March.

The registration period officially begins on Saturday, Jan. 9 and appointments will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Saturday until Feb. 13.

Registrations will also be accepted during normal business hours on weekdays at the district’s registration office at 1196 Park Avenue.

The online registration form can be found at www.cpsed.net by clicking the “Full Day K Reg.” button. Once the form is complete, gather the necessary documents, and call the Central Registration office at 401.270.8150 for an inperson registration appointment.

The district hopes that an earlier registration will ease budgeting and planning efforts before the end of the fiscal year in June.

Cranston also has to submit student data to the state. The city’s schools only began to offer all-day kindergarten at a limited number of schools last year as part of a pilot program and has no real basis to form enrollment projections district wide.

Necessary documents include a birth certificate, proof of residency and immunization records.
