Cucumbers Sold In RI Recalled For Potential Salmonella Contamination
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
CRANSTON, RI — Bedner Growers has recalled some of the cucumbers it sold amid a multi-state salmonella outbreak, the Rhode Island Department of Health said Wednesday.
State health officials said the recalled cucumbers were sold at Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market between April 29 and May 14, and businesses should not sell or serve the recalled cucumbers.
Cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., were sent to retailers, distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors between April 29 and May 19. Cucumbers distributed before this timeframe should be past shelf life and should no longer be available on the market.

RIDOH officials said cucumbers may have been sold individually or in smaller packages, with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name, or best by date. For distributors, restaurants, and retailers who have purchased these cucumbers, the products were labeled as either being “supers,” “selects,” or “plains”.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
