Driver, 18, Charged after Plainfield Pike Crash

Several were hurt after the crash, which snapped a utility pole and sent electrical wires onto the road.

CRANSTON, RI—An 18-year-old is facing reckless driving and driving to endanger charges after a serious crash on Plainfield Pike early Sunday.

Cranston and Johnston police and firefighters were dispatched to the area of Plainfield Pike and Plainfield Circle at around 12:40 a.m. after the driver, identified as Blake Carpenter, of 22 River St., struck a telephone pole.

The crash caused the car to end up mangled and upside down and the impact split the pole, knocking power lines onto the road, the car and temporarily cutting power to the neighborhood.

Five people were injured in the accident, according to reports, and their conditions were not immediately available, but it does not appear any were life-threatening.

After an investigation, police charged Carpenter with driving to endanger resulting in physical injury, three counts of driving so as to endanger resulting in physical injury and reckless driving.

Carpenter was being held for arraignment as of Sunday morning.
