Loaded Gun Found Behind Cranston High School

Police are investigating the discovery of a handgun behind Cranston High School East.

CRANSTON, RI—The Cranston police department is investigating the discovery of a loaded handgun on the ground near the rear of Cranston High School East on Tuesday.

Police were dispatched to the area near the intersection of High School Avenue and Elsie Street after a student saw the gun tucked between two curb stones, said Cranston Police Chief Michael J. Winquist.

Winquist said the student was waiting to be picked up next to the parking lot when he noticed the gun.

The boy’s mother contacted police and several patrol officers and the school resource officer responded.

Officers recovered a loaded revolver, Winquist said.

“How the firearm ended up at this location is currently under investigation,” Winquist said, noting that the gun was not actually on school property.

The boy noticed the gun at around 2:31 p.m., shortly after school dismissal time.

The parking lot where the gun was found is also behind Cranston City Hall.
