Haunted Library? Event Explores Spooky History of Oak Lawn Branch
Staff and visitors have seen falling books, flickering lights and heard voices. Is the library haunted?

CRANSTON, RI—Is the Oak Lawn Library Haunted? The building, which dates back to 1838 when it was once the Oak Lawn School before becoming a library in 1896, is full of ghostly stories—and not just within the pages of the books on the shelves.
"We believe our library has paranormal activity because of its rich history," explains Branch Librarian Stef Blankenship. "So many children and families have been here, it makes sense that they would want to come back and visit."
Visitors and staff have heard disembodied voices, seen flickering lights, falling books and more. In 2014, the Atlantic Paranormal Society investigated those claims and there have been four more investigations since, including one featured on an episode of Ghosts R. N.E.A.R. with the New England Anomalies Research and Investigations group.

The staff of the library isn't afraid. In fact, they're embracing the library's creepy history and will offer a special haunted history tour on Oct. 22.
It's called "History is Alive: A Haunted History Tour of the Oak Lawn Branch Library," and guests will be led by Ocean State Paranormal's Buddy Thayer, who has led two of the five paranormal investigations at the library. He'll be playing audio recordings, showing video clips and more.

"We are never afraid here," reassures Blankenship, "But we are intrigued, and we wanted to have a ghost tour for the public because they are curious about our claims. They feel something in here too and ask what we have uncovered."
Refreshments will be served at the event and all ages are welcome. The event is free, with a suggested $5.00 donation to the Cranston Public Library Association. Registration is encouraged and can be made by calling the library at 401-942-1787. Sign-ups begin October 4th.
The Oak Lawn Branch is located at 230 Wilbur Ave, Cranston, RI 02921.
