Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in children, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system. A healthy person with a Salmonella infection will often experience a fever, sometimes bloody diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain. If the organism gets into the bloodstream, it can cause rare, more serious illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, the department said.
