Update: Wanted Armed Robber Captured After Standoff, Cops Say

The man was wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Pawtucket, police said.

CRANSTON, RI — A wanted man emerged from a basement apartment following a tense standoff with the law Wednesday morning, police said.

The Cranston police had surrounded the house on Warwick Avenue near Henry Street after tracking down Julian Pope, 31, who was wanted in connection with a June 19 armed robbery in Pawtucket, said Cranston Police Chief Michael J. Winquist.

Cranston police had developed two possible addresses for Pope through the license plate on a vehicle used to flee the robbery, Winquist said, adding that the plate was later seen attached to two different vehicles.

A camera captured the plate Wednesday morning and sent an alert to police, who headed to the Warwick Avenue residence and saw a vehicle with the same plate parked in the driveway, the chief said.

Pope and a woman had arrived at the multifamily dwelling a short time before the law, Winquist said, and officers set up a perimeter and evacuated the other residents.

The house was equipped with exterior security cameras, which officers took out with less-than-lethal rounds, Winquist said.

The police called Pope's cellphone twice but he did not answer, Winquist said, and a flash-bang grenade did not convince him to surrender. Tear gas did, however, and Pope and the woman exited the house, he said.

"We're just happy we resolved the situation and no one was injured," Winquist said.

A search of the basement did not turn up a firearm, he said, and the woman who was with Pope was released without charge.
