Rhode Island Launches COVID-19 Vaccine Verification App

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's "401 Health" app went live Monday, allowing residents to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination without needing to carry their paper card.

The app is a redesign of the state's "Crush COVID RI" app, released in May 2020 to help residents keep track of symptoms and contacts, as well as seek testing and other resources. The free application is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, in both English and Spanish.

"We want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for you to securely access your vaccination information," said Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health. "This new app is a great way to verify for others that you have received the critical protection that comes with a COVID-19 vaccine primary series and booster dose."

Seven other states, as well as other countries and retail pharmacies including CVS, Walmart and Walgreens are using the same secure SMART Health vaccination technology to standardize record-keeping, Gov. Dan McKee's office said. Rhode Island will partner with Connecticut and Massachusetts to help onboard them to the system, as well, the governor's office continued.

"Rhode Island has administered close to 2 million doses of COVID vaccine and almost 300,000 booster doses, and our neighbors deserve a convenient, safe, and efficient way to access and store their vaccination record," McKee said. "I have downloaded my vaccination card to my phone and it was very simple. If you haven’t gotten vaccinated yet, it’s not too late. If you haven’t yet, get boosted."
