RI Lawmakers Propose Allowing Utility Companies To Buy Nuclear Power To Lower Costs

If passed, the bill would allow utility companies to purchase nuclear power to save Rhode Island residents money on their electricity bills.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Two Rhode Island lawmakers have introduced a bill that would allow utility companies to purchase nuclear power to save residents money on their electricity bills.

The bill was (2025-H 5575) was introduced by state Rep. Joseph Solomon Jr. (D-Warwick), and was cosponsored by state Rep. William O’Brien (D-North Providence).

"The costs people are seeing on their electric bills are unsustainable for so many of our state’s residents," Solomon said. "We have to do everything in our power to bring these costs down, and that includes increasing our electricity supply with alternatives. This bill will not build a nuclear facility in Rhode Island, but it will allow our utility companies to purchase clean nuclear-powered electricity from existing plants located in other states, which will bring down costs for consumers."

If passed, the legislation would allow public utility companies that provide electric and gas distribution to participate in projects that allow for the reliable transmission of nuclear power. The bill would also allow the utility to procure nuclear power and enter into long-term contracts for nuclear power.

"I think it is irresponsible to not look into alternative energy sources that can help bring down electricity costs that are crippling Rhode Islanders," O'Brien said. "Our residents are already stretched thin with the daily cost of living, and this legislation will help alleviate the stress and anxiety that consumers are feeling every time they open up their electric bill."
