RI Parrot Rescue Scrambling to Care for 130 Birds after Horrific CT Hoarding Case

Volunteers are working around the clock and are desperate for supplies and help.

WARWICK, RI—More than 130 exotic birds are being sheltered by Rhode Island Parrot Rescue after authorities discovered them, along with snakes, turtles and other animals in an apparent case of severe hoarding and animal cruelty in Weston, CT on Thursday.

The organization said in a news release that authorities found the birds after reports of foul orders made in the area of the Newtown Turnpike. The animals were living in deplorable conditions, some dead in their cages.

Volunteers are working overnight to care for the birds and handle the task of caring for such a large number of birds all at once.

"We desperately need donations of cash, towels, bird supplies, and even a large heated space that may be available for a period of 60 days," the organization said.

Weston Animal Control said the hoarding case was one of the worst they've ever seen. The resident reportedly is cooperating with authorities.

The animals were living in a barn behind the house and in the house itself. There were more than 200 animals in all living in both structures.

RIPR volunteers have been working with authorities in Weston all day to catalog and identify birds. A horse trailer with the 130-plus birds arrived in Rhode Island at around 10:30 p.m.

"It has been one of the most horrific hoarding cases we've ever seen. Anyone in the local Rhode Island area who wants to help unload we could use extra hands," they said in a post on their Facebook page.
