PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's average gas price is a full dollar per gallon higher than this time last year, according to the latest survey from AAA Northeast. This week's average price was $3.38, five cents higher than the week before.

AAA said that wintry weather and geopolitical tensions are likely contributing to the rising prices at the pump. Oil is now approximately $90 per barrel, which is about $30 higher than in August. In addition, frigid weather means there is more demand for heating oil in American homes. Finally, concerns about Russia withholding oil supply has spurred rising costs around the world.

"This shows how events on the other side of the globe can have a noticeable impact right here in the U.S," said Lloyd Albert, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast. "And unfortunately for drivers, they are reminded of this by higher prices at the pump."
