A De Facto Tenant, Another Cresthill Car Theft

Thursday, Sept. 20

1:15 a.m. – A South Road resident told police someone had broken into her home without her consent sometime between 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday. The lock were broken off but nothing appeared to be missing.

8:49 a.m. – A Cresthill Drive resident reported someone had gone through her car overnight and taken her GPS unit. The car had been parked in her driveway and had been left unlocked. (To read about Cresthill car thefts from last week, click here). 

Friday, Sept. 21

11:32 a.m. – An employee of the Greenwich Hotel told police a guest had skipped out on a $183.20 bill. Police located the guest, who had since left the hotel, and he told police he was planning to pay the bill within a week.

4:25 p.m. – Police arrested Robert Caramante, 48, of Candlewood Drive in North Kingstown, for driving with a suspended license after he was stopped driving south on Main Street not wearing a seatbelt. Routine checks turned up the suspended license. Caramante was issued a court summons for the license and a citation for the seatbelt offense. A friend arrived to drive Caramante and the car away.

8:41 p.m. – Police put out a small fire in a closet at a residence on First Avenue using a fire extinguisher. The fire may have been started by a candle left burning on the floor. EGFD arrived on the scene for a full investigation.

Saturday, Sept. 22

8:25 a.m. – Police arrested Robert Mattingly, 41, of South Pierce Road, for driving with a suspended license after police saw him drive from Woodland Drive across the lawn to his driveway on South Pierce. They knew from several recent arrests on the same charge that Mattingly’s license was suspended. Mattingly’s eyes were bloodshot and he mumbled when he spoke, according to the report. He admitted he had cocaine and methadone in his system. He was taken to the station and there police found a pipe similar to the type used for smoking crack cocaine. He was arraigned and released.

12:23 p.m. – Police arrested Matthew Paine, 40, of Pontiac Avenue in Cranston, on a bench warrant after the Greenwich Hotel complained about Paine staying in a room he was not checked into. He was processed at the station and taken to the ACI.

3:13 p.m. – A resident of Greenwich Bay Manor on Main Street reported missing a pair of gold earrings and a gold-and-crystal necklace. The resident said she’d seen the jewelry on the previous day in a drawer in her dresser.

11:39 p.m. – Police arrested Scott Edes, 44, of Eldredge Avenue, on a bench warrant after he was seen on Main Street. Police knew Edes from several earlier arrests on various warrants so they did a check on him and turned up the warrant. He was processed at the station and transported to the ACI.

Sunday, Sept. 23

1:17 a.m. – Police arrested Edgar Coates, 37, of Arlington Avenue in Warwick, on a bench warrant after he was stopped for running a stop sign. Routine checks turned up the warrant. Coates was processed at the station and transferred to the ACI. His car was towed from the scene.

2:19 a.m. – A woman asked police for help, saying she’d been abandoned by her husband at Blu on the Water. The couple, from Texas, were visiting his parents who live in EG. The woman, who was by this time at the parking lot at Thorpe’s liquor store, said her husband had begun buying drinks for other women which had upset her. The husband had left Blu as some point but the woman hadn't realized it. Police gave her a ride to her in-laws and found the husband there, asleep.

7:45 p.m. – A Mawney Street woman came to the station to ask police for help getting rid of two men who were drunk in her cellar. She said she’d allowed one of the men to stay there about a week ago. The second man was a friend of the first. Police said they could not forcibly remove the first man because he had become a de facto tenant.
