in East Greenwich is holding a Fall Kickoff event on Sunday, Sept. 9, for families and individuals to register children for church school programs and one of the parish’s two youth choirs. Registration will be open after both of the church’s regular 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday services. All are welcome to attend a free brunch after the 10 a.m. Eucharist.
“We are writing a great new chapter here at St. Luke’s,” said Reverend Timothy Rich, who joined St. Luke’s in June as its 19th rector. “I’m looking forward to welcoming current and new parishioners to our Fall Kickoff event,” said Rich.
Founded in 1834, St. Luke’s is a beautiful stone Gothic Revival church located at 99 Peirce Street in East Greenwich. More than 50 children participate in the church’s choir program. The St. Cecilia Choir (ages 8-16) is a member of the Royal School of Church Music Chorister Achievement Program, and there is a comprehensive music and Christian education format for all rehearsals.
The church school at St. Luke’s serves grades pre-K through 12, with its popular Journey to Adulthood program attracting teens from multiple area schools and communities, says St. Luke’s Director of Christian Education Susan MacDonald. The centerpiece of the program is a mission trip to the Dominican Republic in students’ sophomore or junior year. In recent years, as many as 150 students have been enrolled in the St. Luke’s church school program, says McDonald.
St. Luke’s is involved in multiple outreach ministries, as well, including a monthly community supper that it hosts in its dining hall and participation in a soup kitchen at St. George’s in Central Falls, its companion parish.
