East Greenwich Animal Protection League Facing Eviction

Yet again, EGAPL is a crisis and is searching for a new home or someone to save the day.

The East Greenwich Animal Protection League is facing eviction and volunteers shelter staff and volunteers are scrambling to find housing for their shelter animals.

It’s the second time in a year that the shelter has faced a housing crisis. In March, the owners of the building, which housed the former East Greenwich Animal Hospital, told the organization that they had to leave but a month-to-month lease was negotiated after an outpouring of public support for the shelter.

Now, the shelter is once again facing the same problem. According to the lease, the owners can notify the league they have one month to clear out at any point.

On Facebook, the league posted that “we are being evicted because we cannot afford to purchase the current building we are in.”

The price is $600,000. Unless one or more major donors come forward, the situation seems dire. The shelter launched a capital campaign and while progress has been steady, it has been slow.

“This means we must find a suitable place for all of our shelter animals ASAP or pray that someone will help us buy the building!” the shelter said. “Our hope is someone who is a huge animal lover will save the day & our current home! This might seem impossible but we must try for the sake of our animals and all of the others waiting to be saved!”

EGAPL is a nonprofit no-kill shelter and has been around for more than 30 years. It has served as the municipal animal shelter for East Greenwich.

The shelter had been located at Greenwich Bay Animal Hospital since 1980 but moved to their current space in 2014.

The league is asking for donations, either via a link on their Facebook page or at their website.
