EGHS Football Team Excels During First Home Game of Season
Avengers come on strong against Ponaganset Chiefs with a 34-13 win
Supported by a large contingent of hometown fans, the EGHS varsity football team advanced its season record to 2-0 after Friday night’s win against the Ponaganset Chiefs.
EG’s offense came on strong in the first half with two touchdowns by Carney Crawford and additional touchdowns by Pete Hunzicker and Kyle Palmer. Alex Cleary made three out of four conversion kicks, resulting in a score at the half of 34 EG, 0 Ponaganset. The second half proved somewhat more fruitful for the Chiefs with touchdowns by Scott Peterson and Matt Humphrey. The Avengers answered with an additional touchdown from Alex Cleary. East Greenwich came out on top with a final score of 34-13.
“Everything went well tonight," said Quarterback Andrew Miner, recapping the game, noting the extensive yardage gained by Alex Cleary and Carney Crawford. “Defense was amazing and gave us great protection," he added.

The Avengers next take the field against the Tiverton Tigers in an away game Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. When EG last met Tiverton, the Avengers suffered a 41-14 loss.
“This will be a good test for us,” said Miner. “We’re a much different team this year.”
