Five Things: EGAPL Open House, Spring Ascendent
Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, April 14.

Adopt-A-Pet Open House:Â Animals are available for viewing and adoption today with the assistance of a dedicated East Greenwich Animal Protection League member. The open house takes place at Greenwich Bay Animal Hospital from 10:30 to 1 p.m. Individual appointments are also available.
Grief Support: This group meets in the Christ Church office condo on Sunday afternoons and is for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one. Each week there is a video which covers different topics pertinent to those who are grieving. Following the video there is time to discuss the contents with others in the group. Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. It is a safe and welcoming environment. For more information, contact the church at 884-8632.

Town Council meeting: A special work session with town department heads to review the 2013 budget. At Swift Community Center at 7 p.m.
Avenger Home Action:  It may be school vacation week, but there are plenty of games taking place, including a slew at home on Monday. Fastpitch Varsity Softball against South Kingstown, at 1 p.m.; Boys Varsity Baseball against Toll Gate at 4 p.m.; Boys Lacrosse against North Kingstown, JV at 4 p.m. and Varsity at 6 p.m.; and Boys Varsity Volleyball against Central at 6:30 p.m. You can follow all the Avenger action at the EG Booster Club website here .
EG Historic Preservation Society meeting: Dr. Patrick T. Conley is the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society. Dr. Conley will discuss his two latest books, "The Makers of Modern Rhode Island," and "People, Places, Laws and Lore of the Ocean State." They are fascinating accounts of the people and events that transformed Rhode Island from an agrarian society to an industrial power. Dr. Conley is a professor at Providence College, practices law and manages a real estate development business. The meeting begins with a potluck supper at 6:30 in the Old Jail, 110 King Street, East Greenwich. Dr. Conley's program begins at 7:30. The event is free and open to the public. Register for the Scott Carlson/ALS 5K: The 13th Annual Scott Carlson Memorial 5K takes place in just over a week, on Saturday, April 20. All proceeds benefit Rhode Island families struggling with ALS. Registration opens at 8:30 run/walk at 10 a.m. starting at the bridge by the beach in Goddard Park. Tons of food and great family fun, including a kids fun run on the beach at 9:15. register online at www.teamals.org.
