Five Things: Jazzy Stroll Tonight, Civil War Reenactment Saturday

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, June 13.

Main Street “Jazz” Stroll: Thursday’s stroll is titled “Jazz on Main,” because there will be several different jazz groups playing up and down Main Street in celebration of the Stroll’s 10th anniversary. So plan to spend your Thursday evening on Main Street – you’ll be able to hear great jazz and maybe find a gift for your dad.

Author book signing: Rhode Island author Dick Martin will be signing his novel, Mae, at Symposium Books tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Martin’s story is based his mother’s childhood growing up on a small farm in Scituate.

‘Glory’ at EG Free Library: The Civil War theme continues tonight with the free showing of “Glory” at 6 p.m. at the library, in advance of this Saturday’s Civil War reenactment at New England Tech. You can read about that here.

Fishing 'Chart Chat': Join team members of the Rhode Island Shellfish Management Plan (SMP) during the Warwick Public Library’s Second Annual Quahoggers Jamboree. The SMP team will have an informal display of user maps. These maps were created in coordination with stakeholders through a series of public meetings over the past several months with the goal of illustrating the many different uses of our bays and ponds to minimize user conflict. From 5 to 7 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library. The meeting coincides with Warwick’s Second Annual Quahoggers Jamboree, also at the library from 6 to 8 p.m. You must register online for this event at http://www.warwicklibrary.org/.

What's special about your dad? Please send me your answer to this question and a photo of you and your dad, if you can. elizabeth.mcnamara@patch.com.

On Friday …

‘Lincoln,’ at the library: You can watch “Lincoln,” starring Best-Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, which chronicles the President’s last four months of life as he struggles to have the 13th amendment ratified in Congress. This is part of lead up to this Saturday’s Civil War reenactment at New England Tech. You can read about that here.

On Saturday …

Civil War reenactment at NEIT: The East Greenwich Library and New England Tech are hosting this recreation of an authentic Civil War battlefield encampment, featuring the soldiers, tents and artillery cannons from Battery B, First Regiment Rhode Island Artillery. Stop by this authentic encampment anytime from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and visit with the soldiers in this living history display. The Battery will "fire" their cannons twice that day, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

 And …

Father’s Day gift ideas: The EG Lions Club is offering a round of golf with a cart at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, Mass., for $45 a person, or $180 a foursome. It’s normally $75 per person. The proceeds benefit the EG Lions Club. To purchase, contact Steven Basler at docbasler@verizon.net or 884-8919. Another idea comes from Silver Spoon Bakery, which is hosting a “Decorate for (or with) Dad” event on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. until noon. Parents can bring their child to decorate two cupcakes as a special sweet gift for Dad! Or, bring Dad and decorate with him! We'll have fun toppers like ties, tools, sports, and more! While supplies last - $10.

Speaking of Dads: If you’d like to share what makes your dad special, we’d love to have it, along with a photo of the two of you, if you have one. Send it to me at elizabeth.mcnamara@patch.com. Thanks!
