Gilbert J. Hawkins, CMCS, USNAVY (Ret.), 97, passed away September 28, 2016 at his home.

Gilbert J. Hawkins, CMCS, USNAVY (Ret.), 97, passed away September 28, 2016 at his home. He was the husband of the late Mary C. (Whalen) Hawkins. Born in Bedford, IN, he was a son of the late William G. and Mary C. (Newton) Hawkins.
Mr. Hawkins served in WWII and was one of the last Pearl Harbor survivors. His 28 year career included his assignment onboard the USS Sacramento during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After leaving the service he worked in Civil Service.
He was a Life Member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fleet Reserve and was an Associate Member of the East Greenwich Firemen’s Association.

He is survived by his children: Maureen McLarrin, Thomas Hawkins, David Hawkins, Theresa Foster, Robert Hawkins, Joseph Hawkins, Maria MacIntyre and Michael Hawkins; 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son Francis and 2 brothers.
His funeral will be private.
