Pedestrian Hit On Main Street Last Week

A woman crossing Main Street near the EG Fire Station was hit by a car Friday. She declined medical treatment. It’s the second time in a month that a car has hit a pedestrian on Main Street.

On Feb. 19, two people were injured by a hit-and-run driver on Main Street, one seriously.

According to the police accident report, the incident on Friday took place around 11:15 a.m., when a car driven by Amanda Greene of East Greenwich attempted to turn onto Main Street from Dedford Street.

Greene told police she was stopped on Dedford Street when a car on Main Street stopped to let her turn onto Main Street. Greene drove through the crosswalk, hitting the pedestrian in the knee.

Greene told police she’d seen the pedestrian and another woman on the sidewalk and hadn’t realized they’d begun to cross the street.

The woman who was hit refused medical treatment at the scene. No one was charged.

According to Fire Chief Peter Henrikson, the two accidents on Main Street involving pedestrians are out of the ordinary. He said they are the only such accidents he can recall in the past year.

“The only concern we have here is I just wish they would illuminate the crosswalks better, especially at night,” Henrikson said.
