Police Log: An Unrepentant Dog Owner, A Sidewalk Sleeper

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the East Greenwich Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Thursday, March 28

12:17 p.m. – The animal control officer followed up on a complaint about an unleashed dog at 75 Signal Ridge Way. There were two dogs running off the property unleashed on this afternoon, one belonging to a relative, according to the homeowner. The ACO had notified the owner several times before this, dating back 18 months, telling him to get his dog licensed and to keep it on a leash when off the property, with no result.

3 p.m. – A Division Road resident told police someone may have crashed into the stone wall at the end of his driveway. Several large rocks had been knocked down but police did not see any tire tracks leading to the wall.

Saturday, March 30

12:09 a.m. – Police came upon a man lying on the sidewalk in front of East Greenwich Commons (the CVS plaza). He appeared to be sleeping but it took police several attempts both tapping and talking to him to get the man to respond. The man, from North Kingstown, said he’d left a house on Lion Street after drinking too much and had been walking home. He said he didn’t remember falling asleep on the sidewalk. Police called EG Rescue, which took the man to Kent Hospital.

3:07 a.m. – On routine patrol of East Greenwich High School, police noticed the front entrance door to the new gym was propped open and lights inside were on. Police searched the building but did not find any intruders.

8:30 a.m. – Police were alerted by another driver to be on the lookout for an erratic driver on Main Street. Finding the car, a black Lincoln, police followed and saw it straddling the white line, taking up both northbound lanes. The driver was going very slowly and stopped at a light 75 feet before the stop line, then sped up and went through the red light. Police pulled him over. He appeared to be slow and confused but not drunk. He said he lived in Cranston and was heading to a pharmacy there to pick up some medication. He couldn’t explain why he was in East Greenwich. Police noticed a large oil leak coming from underneath the car, possibly the result of him having driven over something that punctured the oil pan. EG Rescue was called and they took the man to Kent Hospital for evaluation. The car was towed from the scene.

11:23 a.m. – A Warwick woman came into the station to ask about a possible restraining order violation against her husband, who lives in East Greenwich – they are in the final stages of divorce. She said she had filed for a restraining order but she’d heard from her husband that it had not yet been served.  She said he is calling and texting her regularly and said that on Friday she had been at La Masseria with a male friend and her husband walked by with two of their children. She said when he saw her, he began banging on the window of the restaurant, yelling at the man she was with and pointing to the children. She said she feared for her safety. Since the order hadn’t been served, police said there was no violation.

6:04 p.m. – Police arrested Derek John Paquin, 36, of Willow Street in West Warwick, for driving with a suspended license after he was pulled over on Duke Street because of a loud exhaust system. Routine checks turned up the license violation. Police issued a court summons and told him to report to the station for processing before his court date. His companion drove the car from the scene.

10 p.m. – Police were called to assist EG Rescue after a man who appeared to be very drunk fell on the sidewalk in front of Mainstreet Coffee. The man was taken to Kent Hospital.  The bartender at Mainstreet Coffee said he had not been served there.
