Rhode Island State Police: 50 Pounds of Marijuana Seized During a Traffic Stop on I-95 in West Greenwich

Police said they stopped a New York City man on I-95 for speeding and then found the marijuana in his car.

WEST GREENWICH, RI — State troopers seized 50 pounds of marijuana on Tuesday night after a traffic stop in West Greenwich.

Jonathan Yu, 27, of New York City, was charged with possession of marijuana in excess of five kilograms and possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance Schedule I and II (marijuana).

He was stopped for allegedly speeding on I-95 North in West Greenwich around 10:25 p.m. last night. Police allege they clocked him at 81 mph.

"During a search of his car, troopers found 47 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana in the trunk," police said. "The total weight was 50 pounds with an estimated street value of approximately $50,000."

He was cited for speeding and taken into custody on the drug charges. Yu was held overnight. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
