RI Sees Most New Coronavirus Cases In A Day Since April

Positivity rates and hospitalizations also rose since last week, although no new deaths were reported Friday.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island health officials said there were 348 new coronavirus cases Friday, the most new cases reported in a day since April 20.

Other key COVID-19 metrics also saw increases from the previous week, according to the Department of Health. The daily positivity rate increased from 2.8 percent last week to 3.4 percent Friday. This came as more than 10,000 Rhode Island residents got tested Friday, the most tests in a single day since the beginning of June.

The rate used to gauge community transmission also rose over the past week from 106 new cases per 100,000 people to 145, as did hospitalizations. This week, there were 68 new hospitalizations, compared to 38 the week prior, according to the Department of Health. As of Friday, there are 85 Rhode Islanders hospitalized with COVID-19.

No new deaths were reported Friday.

According to the latest state data, 66 percent of Rhode Island residents have received at least one vaccine, while more than 60 percent have received both doses. More than 1.35 million vaccine doses have been administered.
