EXETER, RI—A 60-year-old South Kingstown woman was seriously hurt after she was struck by a car being driven 20-year-old by a University of Rhode Island student on Route 2 in Exeter on Wednesday morning.

The state police said in a news release that the driver, Neal Glennon, of East Greenwich, abruptly entered the breakdown lane to avoid crashing into a car that stopped in front of him to make a left turn, consequently striking the woman who was walking with a friend.

Police said Glennon "encountered a vehicle that had stopped" and drove into the breakdown lane "in an attempt to avoid a collision with the turning vehicle and another directly behind it."
