Want To See Cannon Fired? Come To New England Tech Saturday

The East Greenwich Free Library and the NEIT library have planned a series of events remembering the Civil War – including an outdoor encampment with Battery B artillery regiment.

If you are driving on Division Road Saturday and see a distinctly 1860s tableaux on the south side of the street, you aren't dreaming. Battery "B" 1st R.I. Light Artillery, a Civil War-era regiment, is setting up camp on the campus of New England Tech – the culmination of a series of events on the Civil War put on by EG's two libraries: the EG Free Library and the New England Tech library.

The encampment is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The highlights, of course, will be the two times Battery "B" fires its cannon, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The event is free and all are welcome. There will be plenty of free parking.

Here's how Battery "B" describes itself:

Battery "B" 1st R.I. Light Artillery was reactivated on May 8, 1986.... [It] operates under the original State Militia Charter issued to the original military unit that served during the American Civil War 1861 through 1865. Priding itself on the accuracy and authenticity of uniform, drill and camp life, the Battery acts as a custodian of Rhode Island's rich Civil War history.... By participating in various ceremonies and re-enactments in the Northeast, the Battery strives to portray an accurate interpretation of military and civilian life, during that trying time in America’s history. We teach today's Americans of the dedication, commitment, and sacrifices made by the men and women of our small state during the war of the rebellion.
