Bay View Student Wins National Merit Scholarship & More

EAST PROVIDENCE RI–Bay View senior Rebekah Pendrak, of North Providence, has won a National Merit Scholarship. The recognition, which comes with $2,500, is one of the most prestigious awards given to U.S. high school students. She is among eight in Rhode Island who are 2018 merit scholarship winners.

In addition, Rebekah has been named one of 630 semifinalists in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholarship Program. According to the press release, "inclusion in the program, which is now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in the community and school activities.

"The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars sometime in May."

Rebekah is going to attend Cornell University in the fall, Bay View said. She plans to major in engineering.
