EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The former president of the Rhode Island Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) died Monday due to complications from the coronavirus.
According to the RISPCA, Dr. Ernest J. Finnochio served as the non-profit's 10th President and General Agent for 18 years, retiring in March 2019.
"A tireless and dedicated crusader for animal welfare, Dr. Finocchio was known and respected for his tireless advocacy on behalf of creatures great and small," the RISPCA said in a statement. "He was one of the first veterinarians in the State of Rhode Island with a dedicated equine practice and he owned and operated New England Horse Care Center for 35 years prior to assuming the leadership of the Rhode Island SPCA."

While he served as leader of the RISPCA, Dr. Finocchio succeeded in advocating for enhancements to the state's animal welfare laws, expanding the non-profit's volunteer base, and improving the organization's shelter and facilities. He was also the founder of the Marvin Fund, named after the disabled black Labrador Retriever he adopted. The fund was established in 2010 and provides financial assistance for veterinary care to low-income pet owners.
"Dr. Finocchio was named the Veterinarian of the year by the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Society in 2019," said the RISPCA. "He will be greatly missed by all that knew him, particularly those who worked with him at the Society."
