St. Mary Academy - Bay View Athletic Director Arrested And Fired

The athletic director was arrested at the administration building on a warrant out of Florida, a school spokesman said.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The director of athletics and strategic programs at St. Mary Academy - Bay View was arrested on a warrant out of Florida, a school spokesman confirmed.

John Sung, 47, faces charges of communications fraud and second-degree grand theft in Broward County, court records show.

Sung was fired from the all-girls Catholic school Wednesday after he was arrested on the Florida warrant by East Providence police, school spokesman Gregg Perry said in an email.

"He was arrested without incident in the administration building on the Bay View campus and was terminated within hours of being taken into custody,” Perry said.

"Mr. Sung is alleged to have committed a non-violent felony and property related crime," Perry's email said. "Mr. Sung was hired in August 2025 at St. Mary Academy - Bay View after having undergone background and reference checks. At that point in time, his record came back clean."

When Sung was hired by St. Mary Academy - Bay View, the Rhode Island Catholic reported he had a "24-year career in collegiate athletics and a passion for student development."

"Before coming to Bay View, Sung was the interim director of athletics at Nova Southeastern University and the head women's lacrosse coach and assistant athletic director at Carthage College," the Rhode Island Catholic story said. "His career also includes a notable five-year tenure at Virginia Tech, where he became the most successful coach in the program’s history with 45 victories."
