Johnston Fatal: Driver Will Face Felony Charge: State Police

The driver who fled a Johnston police officer Tuesday will be charged with a felony in connection with his passenger's death.

JOHNSTON, RI — The driver who fled a Johnston police officer Tuesday will be charged with a felony in connection with his passenger's death, state police said Thursday. Alpha Williams, 47, of Cranston, led police on a mile long chase that started around 7:10 p.m. on Route 6 East. Speeding into Providence, Williams lost control of the Toyota Avalon near the Hartford Avenue exit ramp. He hit a guardrail. His passenger, David Johnson, 47, of Providence, was ejected. Johnson later died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Williams, who was initially identified as a Providence resident, is being charged with Driving to endanger, death resulting, state police said. He was arrested Thursday and is being held overnight at state police headquarters. He will be arraigned on Friday.
